Portage Overview

Portage is a growing, Native American-owned engineering and environmental services firm. The company was founded by Mike Spry, Nick Stanisich, and Kevin Poor, who met while working at the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory [now Idaho National Laboratory (INL)]. The partners shared a vision for a full-service environmental consulting business with a focus on providing challenging, rewarding work for employees and the best value to customers.

Since incorporating in Idaho Falls, Idaho, in 1992, Portage has grown to more than 300 employees and was included in Inc. magazine’s list of 500 fastest growing private companies for four consecutive years (2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005). Portage also has a subsidiary company—Portage Staffing Services—as well as two joint-venture companies—Paducah Remediation Services (PRS) and Accelerated Remediation Company (ARC).

In March 2007, Portage became a protégé company to Battelle Energy Alliance (BEA). Portage has also been a protégé company to Shaw Environmental and Infrastructure since 2003.

Initially, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) was Portage’s sole customer. The company worked on projects for DOE at the Hanford site in Washington as well as at INL. While DOE continues to be a major customer, Portage has also cultivated new customers, including the Idaho and Montana Departments of Environmental Quality, tribal governments, and the Air Force Center for Engineering and the Environment within the U.S. Department of Defense.

Mission Statement

At Portage we provide competent, responsive, and cost-effective services to customers in federal, state, tribal, and local governments, and private industry. We believe in:
  • Developing innovative approaches to solve problems, when off-the-shelf solutions don't meet the customer's requirements;
  • Taking regulatory compliance beyond meeting minimal standards to help our customers achieve their goals;
  • Letting the quality of our work speak for us.
